I'm from England, but I lived in Pittsburgh in 1962-67 and worked at Hornes (My gap year lasted 5 years) These are absolutely superb photos and I admire your skill. I have not been back for many years ...probably 30 but I could see considerable changes. I was on Forbes avenue at the YMCA when they built the IBM building (It is / was all diamonds and at the time quite the revolution. I think it was about that time when they built the Dome. Thank you for these stunning memories, I'm close to 70 and unlikely to return, but you never do quite lose memories of a place that treated me very well. I had many good friends but sadly one by one they stopped sending cards. Cheers, David Frances

Our Pretty City. These photos are simply amazing. I love how you've captured the neighborhoods as well. I send this site over and over again to people. They just love it, and those who have moved on get to see a bit of their home town from your point of view. Love it and the Burgh,

Thank you so much for posting your amazing photos on the internet. my husband and I are both from Pittsburgh and our parents and families still live there. We are extremely proud of where we come from and have used your pictures as backgrounds on our home and work computers. We miss our home town so much and it's great to be able to come here and look at pictures of the burgh to remind us of home! Your photos show others that Pittsburgh is so much more than just an old steel town.

As a native Pittsburgher now living in TN I really enjoyed looking at the pictures. I never tire of the view from Mt. Washington or coming out of the tunnels and seeing the point. You can take the kid out of the city but not the city out of the kid.

Thanks so much for the awesome pictures. My husband and I both wore born in Pgh. and after moving to Fl. when my hysband retired, he kept saying, you can take the boy out of Pa. but, you can`t take Pa. out of the boy. He has passed away and I wish he could have seen these. I will be moving back to Pa. soon, all the family is there. Thanks

Matt,
You are incredibly artistic! These photo's are amazing. My husband son & I moved from Pittsburgh on Labor day weekend 2005 to move to Florida. The thing that I really miss besides my friends and relatives is the "Skyline of the City of Pittsburgh", I even put that in my Christmas letter. Now, I have your site saved to my favorites and I look at these pictures at least once a week. Thank You!!

I was in awe looking at these pictures. I am sure glad that my friend forwarded them to me. Some of them are very significant to me as I was on the construction crew that built the PPG, Mellon buildings and the subway. I was an operating engineer and ran various cranes and heavy equipment in the Pittsburgh area from 1978 until 1987. I was one (1 out of 4) females to graduate from the apprentice program for Local 66. I was the first in Beaver County. I have since moved on in the career field by being employed by US Airways and have now took an early retirement because of health problems. I would like to buy one of the photos that has the PPG building and the Mellon building in it. I will let you know if you send me you email address or a phone number to call you...Keep up the great work..These pictures are all awesome....

The city would still shine through though. It has so much charachter and greatest people in the world!

It just goes to show you that Pittsburgh is no longer (and hasn't been for a very long time) the "smokey city." These pictures are awesome! Proud to be a native Pittsburgher!

Just echoing the comments-I never missed Pgh so much! Even though I get back about every 2 years, I see the changes year in and year out. Nonetheless, I loved the city and didn't move because I didn't. Lived in Houston and Las Vegas, each has its appeal, but not like "home". My Northside, Manchester, is long gone, but the spirit of Pgh continues.

Nonetheless, I loved the city and didn’t move because I didn’t. Lived in Houston and Las Vegas, each has its appeal, but not like “home”. My Northside, Manchester, is long gone, but the spirit of Pgh continues.

These photos are amazing. Loved the angles, the colors, the composition. I always take visitors through the Fort Pitt tunnels to see the way the city just pops out before you unexpectedly. These photos gave me that same sensation.
Wish I knew your secret vantage point to shoot that front-on view of the city! West End, I'm thinking...

These photos brought tears to my eyes after being away for nearly a half century. As a vintage 1933 Pittsburgher, I am saddened by the absence of the steel mills, Forbes Field, bustling Penn Station, Schenley Mansion, old yellow trolleys, etc., but the City has acquired a new persona and is as impressive as ever. Thanks for the memories.

I am a native Pittsburgher and have lived here all my life except for a few years when my husband was in the Marines. It will always be the most beautiful city to me, as the people are the most wonderful and friendly. You have captured so much of the essence of the city, old and new. My daughter and I are season ticket holders for Pirates games, and we are actually in one of your shots-our seats are just up from first base. (I printed in and blew it up a bit and there we are!) Keep showing the world how great Pittsburgh really is. We Pittsburghers know it and it is wonderful to see how people from all over the world are saying the same thing.

Blew me away...
I am former resident, with lots of family still in residence. Thanks for the great pics, ynz!!
I am curious about lots of them...so much new, but the old is fine and clean, while the new is spectacular and fresh.
Keep up the good work.

Born and raised nearly 65 years ago in a "haus" in "dawn-tawn" Pittsburgh; felt insulted when told by a Marylander that I had an accent back in the 60's; then after visiting San Fransisco in the 70's and seeing the architecture so re-vered, I felt I knew a big, big, secret....Pittsburgh is and always will be....a jewel in the rough. Thanks to the photo artist who has given us a look at one of the facets!!

Im from Canada and have lived in the Burgh for a while now. What I didnt see in your pics were all the homes situated up in the hills overlooking the whole view of pitts. I live on the South Side slopes and the view from my back porch is am
amazing. The homes up there are all very tall and very slender. It was the first time in my life that I had seen homes that looked like this. The one my husband and I bought was built in the late 1800's. One thing you cant show in the pictures, is the friendliness of the people of Pittsburgh. Amazing for a city this big. Think the title "city of brotherly love" should have been named after the Burgh.

I AM SO LUCKY THAT I HAVE A FRIEND WHO FORWARDED THIS TO ME. THE PHOTOGRAPHY IS UNBELIEVABLY BEAUTIFUL.
I LIVE ON THE SOON TO BE BOOMING NORTH SHORE; I LOVE THE URBAN LIFE. HOPEFULLY, AFTER OTHERS SEE THESE PICTURES (AND I WILL BE FORWRDING THIS TO EVERYONE) THEY WILL SEE THE PROMISE OF LIVING IN THE 'CITY'.

Thanks for the work. You should be paid by the Chamber of Commerce. These photos are the best. My wife and I were born and raised in Tarentum. My Aunt and Uncle had a Dodge Dealership on East Carson Street (Romanik Motors). We left the area in 1967. We now live in Florida but go back as often as we can. I go to KDKA.COM every day just to keep up with what's going on. We are avid Steeler Fans and we will always be Pittsburghers. Thanks again.

How beautiful and clean Pittsburgh now is. I remember the city 30 years ago when I was a foreign exchange student in Pennsylvania. Great change! Congratulations!
In the three-river-stadium we then saw a fabulous concert by Pink Floyd: "Dark Side of the Moon".

I graduated from Tech in 1956 and came to California and worked in aerospace. I'm retired and a widower and I'd love to return to Pittsburgh and live but I don't think I could handle those winters again. It's a beautiful city that got a lot prettier since I left 50 years ago. Thanks for the wonderful pictures.

Wow, Wow, wow!...loved the pics, absolutely beautiful and nalstalgic! Brought tears to my eyes because this is the essence of the 'Burgh' I miss the most. Thank you for showing the world one of the reasons Pittsburgh was voted the most livable city. My husband & I moved to Annapolis, MD 20 yrs ago (nice town but it is not the 'Burgh'). We still have our house there and will never sell for this reason, we always want to have some part of it and will always come back as often as life allows. We will certainly pass these on to friends & amily. We started a little league progarm here (football, basketball & cheerleading) for under priveledged children and named them the Brownswoods Steelers. YEAH! go Steelers! You do great work, keep it up and thanks.

Stunning - love the lightning. Sunsets for your next project would be superb. Yinz got dawn tawn alright. Da Burgh born and raised and anytime I have traveled not only do I mention the burb I live outside of but ALWAYS MAKE SURE TO MENTION THAT I'M A PITTSBURGHER and it's the best place in the world to live for many reasons - to mention a few - the people - the entertainment and the sports.

As a retired Pittsburgher and also USAF, I was really impressed with your gallery of photos. I would like to know if prints are available and if so what are your fees? There are several that I would like to frame in 8x10 size. My thanks in advance for your reply. Bob Moler

Was in the Burgh in 1963 while transitting to Wright-Patterson AFB to stay with my uncle until I enlisted in the AF in Columbus, OH. Only spent one night in Pittsburgh and never realized how beautiful the city was/is.

A military buddy of mine from the 60's still lives in the Burgh. He is the "T". I am the "Z". He referred me to the site.
Thanks "T" for the view. He'll know what these letters mean.

Moved out to Denver from Pittsburgh. Love it here, but will always bleed black and gold. Thanks for the great pictures! Made me homesick! Pictures couldn't have showed up in my mailbox at a better time, knowing the Pens will stay in the city for a while longer. THANKS, MARIO!

I spent two holidays in Pittsburgh (May 2004 & May/June 2006) staying at my friends Bob & Gill. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and absolutely loved Pittsburgh and was made to feel very welcome by all the Americans I met. The photographs are stunning and brought back many happy memories of my stay in your wonderful city. Looking forward to my next trip.

Once a Pittsburgher, always a Pittsburgher. We have been in Arizona for 30 years and truly love it but there will always be a warm place in our hearts for one of the most beautiful cities in the country. Great photographs! Great City! Great People! Great Memories!

Awed by your fantastic pictures! A native born and raised in Mt. Washington, enlisted in the USN (61 years ago), but have been home often ever since, and still love and miss it. But your pictures made me realize how great the city is, and to recall memories trekking it as a kid down the incline and over the Smithfield Street Bridge. Thanks for the memories.

What a spectacular presentation of our beautiful and colorful city. I have lived here all of my life and have surely seen the changes along the way. What a sharp contrast to the mental pictures I have stored in my mind of how the city looked back when I was a child!! What a treat to see the city through your eyes....

Matt...I have seen your pictures before, some years ago. Your photographic skills have grown as awesome as our city has. I can see you love Pittsburgh as much as I have all my life. Keep on snappin' those shots of the bridges and the rivers so everyone can see how much they are a part of us. I loved your neighborhood shots too. They really picked up the character of this big city made of little villages. Thanks so much for sharing your talent and these awe inspiring photos. The continuous loop video was pretty cool, too! All the best!

The "Burgh certainly has changed alot since my days at Kiski School from 1970-74. It was a scary place at that time, being a Native Californian etc. It was old, dark, smoky, and I had never seen anything like it before.

But now the City of Steel and Coal had been polished to a Diamond!

Long live the'Burgh!!

I forward this link to people I meet around the world who, when they ask me where I am from, tend to say, "Pittsburgh?! Ugh! Isn't that a dirty, gray steel town?" I tell them, "Not any more!"
I LOVE my city!

My niece from Clearfield, PA sent me these pictures. I am still wiping the tears from my eyes. They are awesome. My Mother worked as a janitress in the Keenan Building right there in Pittsburgh, many a night I looked from the 21st floor at this beautiful city. I love it and I miss it. Eugene too. Spent weekends at the Civic Arena and Heinz Hall performances, never forget it. We live in the Florida Keys, when visiting Pennsylvania, catch Pittsburgh every chance we get. Contratulations on a tremendous collection. Go Steelers...we are counting on you!!!!

What a trip back in time! I lived in Pittsburgh back in the late sixties when I was attending Pitt. Too bad we didn't have the money to truly enjoy all that the city had to offer at the time. You know how it is with poor students! Great pix! I always enjoy going back for a visit!

Those pictures were so beautiful I got goosebumps! I live in NYC but grew up in Pittsburgh. I have always and still feel it is the most beautiful city and your pictures just confirm the truth. I am a little homesick now! Thanks so much for the wonderful pictures. I can't wait to send them to all my friends!

Can any of your photos be purchased? I am interested in a photo from the January 2007 series to give to neighbors who are moving away from Pittsburgh.
Thanks for your help.

Carlynton High 1988! After moving I have realized American steel had died, as well as textiles and furniture in NC...now. What Pittsburgh has NOT failed in, is bringing educated, wonderful talent to the world! I would gather it is now Pittsburgh's biggest export! I See them everyday. I have never met an expatriate Pittsburgher that will not make you feel at home. It is the great city we come from. The pictures are marvelous! Thanks Matt!

Delphine Clemons was my initial contact to Pittsburgh and what awesome memories. Jus arrived from Wiesbaden Germany to Pittsburgh and was recieved by Delphine Clemons. Responisble, dependabe, trustworty, and Best of All, a real down to earth person who cared to help us. Her professionalism brought us peace of mind from transitioning from Europe to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh should be very proud of one speacial realtor, DELPHINE CLEMONS.
Delphine taught us Pittsburghs's culture, Good health, family , and blessing all around you in lovely Pittsburgh.
It's all about culture.
