I’m from England, but I lived in Pittsburgh in 1962-67 and worked at Hornes (My gap year lasted 5 years) These are absolutely superb photos and I admire your skill. I have not been back for many years …probably 30 but I could see considerable changes. I was on Forbes avenue at the YMCA when they built the IBM building (It is / was all diamonds and at the time quite the revolution. I think it was about that time when they built the Dome. Thank you for these stunning memories, I’m close to 70 and unlikely to return, but you never do quite lose memories of a place that treated me very well. As a native Pittsburgher now living in TN I really enjoyed looking at the pictures. I never tire of the view from Mt. Washington or coming out of the tunnels and seeing the point. You can take the kid out of the city but not the city out of the kid.

The thing that I really miss besides my friends and relatives is the “Skyline of the City of Pittsburgh”, I even put that in my Christmas letter. I was in awe looking at these pictures. I am sure glad that my friend forwarded them to me. Some of them are very significant to me as I was on the construction crew that built the PPG, Mellon buildings and the subway. I was an operating engineer and ran various cranes and heavy equipment in the Pittsburgh area from 1978 until 1987. I was one (1 out of 4) females to graduate from the apprentice program for Local 66. I was the first in Beaver County. I have since moved on in the career field by being employed by US Airways and have now took an early retirement because of health problems. I would like to buy one of the photos that has the PPG building and the Mellon building in it. I will let you know if you send me you email address or a phone number to call you…Keep up the great work..These pictures are all awesome….

Just echoing the comments-I never missed Pgh so much! Even though I get back about every 2 years, I see the changes year in and year out. Nonetheless, I loved the city and didn’t move because I didn’t. Lived in Houston and Las Vegas, each has its appeal, but not like “home”. My Northside, Manchester, is long gone, but the spirit of Pgh continues.

These photos are amazing. Loved the angles, the colors, the composition. I always take visitors through the Fort Pitt tunnels to see the way the city just pops out before you unexpectedly. These photos gave me that same sensation.

These photos brought tears to my eyes after being away for nearly a half century. As a vintage 1933 Pittsburgher, I am saddened by the absence of the steel mills, Forbes Field, bustling Penn Station, Schenley Mansion, old yellow trolleys, etc., but the City has acquired a new persona and is as impressive as ever. I am a native Pittsburgher and have lived here all my life except for a few years when my husband was in the Marines. It will always be the most beautiful city to me, as the people are the most wonderful and friendly. You have captured so much of the essence of the city, old and new. My daughter and I are season ticket holders for Pirates games, and we are actually in one of your shots-our seats are just up from first base. (I printed in and blew it up a bit and there we are!) Born and raised nearly 65 years ago in a “haus” in “dawn-tawn” Pittsburgh; felt insulted when told by a Marylander that I had an accent back in the 60’s; then after visiting San Fransisco in the 70’s and seeing the architecture so re-vered, I felt I knew a big, big, secret….Pittsburgh is and always will be….a jewel in the rough. Im from Canada and have lived in the Burgh for a while now. What I didnt see in your pics were all the homes situated up in the hills overlooking the whole view of pitts. I live on the South Side slopes and the view from my back porch is am
amazing. The homes up there are all very tall and very slender. It was the first time in my life that I had seen homes that looked like this. The one my husband and I bought was built in the late 1800’s. One thing you cant show in the pictures, is the friendliness of the people of Pittsburgh. Amazing for a city this big. Think the title “city of brotherly love” should have been named after the Burgh.

Thanks for the work. You should be paid by the Chamber of Commerce. These photos are the best. My wife and I were born and raised in Tarentum. My Aunt and Uncle had a Dodge Dealership on East Carson Street (Romanik Motors). We left the area in 1967. We now live in Florida but go back as often as we can. I go to KDKA.COM every day just to keep up with what’s going on. We are avid Steeler Fans and we will always be Pittsburghers. Thanks again.

I graduated from Tech in 1956 and came to California and worked in aerospace. I’m retired and a widower and I’d love to return to Pittsburgh and live but I don’t think I could handle those winters again. It’s a beautiful city that got a lot prettier since I left 50 years ago. Wow, Wow, wow!…loved the pics, absolutely beautiful and nalstalgic! Brought tears to my eyes because this is the essence of the ‘Burgh’ I miss the most. Thank you for showing the world one of the reasons Pittsburgh was voted the most livable city. My husband & I moved to Annapolis, MD 20 yrs ago (nice town but it is not the ‘Burgh’). We still have our house there and will never sell for this reason, we always want to have some part of it and will always come back as often as life allows. We will certainly pass these on to friends & amily. We started a little league progarm here (football, basketball & cheerleading) for under priveledged children and named them the Brownswoods Steelers. Was in the Burgh in 1963 while transitting to Wright-Patterson AFB to stay with my uncle until I enlisted in the AF in Columbus, OH. Only spent one night in Pittsburgh and never realized how beautiful the city was/is.

A military buddy of mine from the 60’s still lives in the Burgh. He is the “T”. I am the “Z”. He referred me to the site.

WOW Steelers country looks great I wish I was there. I been born and raised in Montana all my life, but wishes I could moved to Pittsburgh to see the Steelers,Penguins,Pirates, Panthers,and Explosion. I spent two holidays in Pittsburgh (May 2004 & May/June 2006) staying at my friends Bob & Gill. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and absolutely loved Pittsburgh and was made to feel very welcome by all the Americans I met. The photographs are stunning and brought back many happy memories of my stay in your wonderful city. Looking forward to my next trip.

Just saw the picks of the burgh and realized how much we miss it. We left beaver valley in 86 and go back every couple of years .Fla is nice but you can take the people out of Pittsburgh but younzs can’t take the Pittsburgh out of the people some really great pics thanks Al and Ida Pletz

The “Burgh certainly has changed alot since my days at Kiski School from 1970-74. It was a scary place at that time, being a Native Californian etc. It was old, dark, smoky, and I had never seen anything like it before.

But now the City of Steel and Coal had been polished to a Diamond!

My niece from Clearfield, PA sent me these pictures. I am still wiping the tears from my eyes. They are awesome. My Mother worked as a janitress in the Keenan Building right there in Pittsburgh, many a night I looked from the 21st floor at this beautiful city. I love it and I miss it. Eugene too. Spent weekends at the Civic Arena and Heinz Hall performances, never forget it. We live in the Florida Keys, when visiting Pennsylvania, catch Pittsburgh every chance we get. Carlynton High 1988! After moving I have realized American steel had died, as well as textiles and furniture in NC…now. What Pittsburgh has NOT failed in, is bringing educated, wonderful talent to the world! I would gather it is now Pittsburgh’s biggest export! I See them everyday.
