You have such a great eye for photography. I miss the burgh very much, its really nice to see your pictures. It makes you feel like you are walking in the strip, driving accross the bridges, sittin on Mt. Washington, and drivin the boat on the Mon. I live in West Palm Beach Florida where its to hot and dealing with the cone of uncertainty!! The only nice thing here are Steelers Bars and Primantis down in Ft. Lauderdale (30 minutes away). Can you travel to 7 Springs next winter and post some of those photos? Just an idea!! Just like Chuck said “Thanks for brining home to me!”
    Thanks again

I visit this site frequently and would like to know if your photos are for purchase. i know many people who would love these as gifts, and you truly have a gift for exposing Pittsburgh’s dramatic beauty. I am moving home soon and whenever I am homesick I check this site. It’s like food for soul. Thanks! Pittsburgh’s greatest export is it’s people.

No place in the country comes close to this town with character, unique personality, and great neighborhoods like this town. You really know how to show it. Keep it up. Also, your photos of other towns are great also. Visit Denver one day, and phootgraph it. I love that town.

Moved to L.A. in ’68. Have been back many times to visit family and friends. Now retired and living in Laguna Woods, South Orange County. I miss the smell of the rich soil made by falling leaves, the soft, moist air, the friendly voices all around you, my family.
Great pix! I could cry. I have fond memories of huge family picnics on Saint Anthony’s Day in South Park. The beautiful stone shelters, the huge swimming pool, family softball games. All the ethnic peoples enjoying their favorite foods set upon a groaning table. Grandma’s bouncing babys on their knees and the old men smoking cigars and having a beer, talking Steelers. If these pictures lack anything, it is the wonderful heart of Pittsburgh’s friendly people and their attachment to each other and the church or temple in the neighborhoods. A Pittsburgher must wonder what the immigration fuss is all about. Immigrants are what built this town, we all still speak native languages, eat ethnic foods and share our churchs and temples, but we all bleed Red, White and Blue. This is what makes America great.

What Marvelous photos of Pittsburgh. I’ve lived in California since 1961 — lots of lovely things, but none to compare with my old ‘burgh. I’m passing them on to other ‘displaced’ friends.

I love your pics. I have them as screensaver shots on my computer at work. People (in Philly) STILL think Pittsburgh is a smokey, dirty, factory-strewn town from the pre-50s era. They are so ignorant sometimes. They are AMAZED at your shots saying things like “…its probably digitally enhanced..” or something of that tone. Yea, the ‘burgh has its problems like ANY city but it also has its charms! You seem to be able to touch that side. I know it probably wouldn’t be received well but do you think you could take a pic on a day and show the same pic from 10, 20 30 years ago?! THAT would be awesome!! Or maybe some snow shots?! Your shots are very good!

P.S. I like the Philly Skyline shots you did too!

These photos are absolutely stunning! I’m from the burgh, live in Montana and am moving to Melbourne Australia. I just realized that this city is much like Melbourne minus the hills. Great job and to some degree, makes me homesick for family and friends. Pittsburgh is a lot like Melbourne that way too – great people and friendly. Though Big Sky Country offers open skys and great outdoor adventures, it has NOTHING on the people of “the burgh”. Now, where’s the chipped ham and jumbo? LOL

  56. Shane Eckel wrote:

We must have the same eyes, because I took the same shot of the Clemente. We should go out shooting, I’ve been climbing the bridges (which might be slightly illegal) lately and making abstract images out of the shots.

    Great stuff, properly exposed.

Just viewed the site pictures and after leaving the area some 37 years ago, many changes have taken place. However, the basic town remains, good hard working blue collar individuals who have made this a GREAT CITY. I have desire to return but only to visit. There are still friends and family in and around the area…our returns are less and less and the years past. Your pictures make it possible to be “almost home!” Thank You for such good work…

Never met a ‘burgher that everyone didn’t love. It’s the story we all need to tell..that Pittsburgh is not a city covered in smog and filth, an eternal cloud. It’s heart is in steel, and that blue collar is on every one of us. But the smog has cleared, and everyone can now see that it is full of color, hills to match any SF chase scene, and food to beat any New York market. I hope it stays the best kept secret, so we can continue to enjoy and claim it as the city that is still the same one we grew up in. Primanti’s for the holidays!

I had asnother career as a Construction Project Manager with many projects throughout Florida. and then a final retirement in 2001. During these years I have often visited Pittsburgh and Wilkinsburg to remember the old days with love in my heart and the best of memories. As I looked at these photos, I have a hard time remembering those areas and sites, far too many changes since 1956! I also often think about my growing up days back in Pittsburg. I only have one sister remaining of my family which she now resides in Butler, PA. I most likely will never relocate back Hto Pittsburgh but I will never forget the vivid, loving memories of this city that I call “MY HOME TOWN”.

These are great! Live in E.Liverpool and just did a all day at Pittsburg yesterday! Beautiful day at the Science Center and got to see all the Pitt fans going in to the Steeler Stadium for a unfortunate loss, but beautiful day for football. My son takes beautiful pictures who was with us and hope he can add some of the incline that some of you have missed. We sat at a restaurant at Station Square and sat outside and enjoyed the boats and all the lights of Pittsburg. As a child of the 50′s and 60′s it was always awesome coming through the tunnels to the world of Pittsburg (Still is!!). It was like arriving at Oz….Looking forward to going back next month for fall events at the Science center and Fall foilage boat ride. Love visiting Pittsburg…

Thanks for the pictures…how about some of KennyWood Park too…they have fixed it up so nice now. Was getting run down, but like always pride of Pittsburg they fixed it up!!

I left Pittsburgh after graduating from Pitt in June of 1953. I have no family left in Pittsburgh so I don’t get back as much as I used to. The photos are great and bring back memories of the good times I spent there in school from first grade on. I truly miss Pittsburgh. It is a great place to have lived. There are quite a few of us transplanted retired “Burghers” here in Midland and we get together often and talk about the good times we spent there. At one time there were four of us Petroleum Engineering classmates living here in Midland, where the Steelers have a real following. I am quite surprised to see that these photos and the comments generated by them are updated. I spent some time to see if I recognised any of the “authors”, but didn’t have much luck.

I was wondering if I could use some of your pics as inspiration and maybe paint a few of them? If you would allow it just write me and let me know. Again, beautiful pics. Can’t wait to get there.

It was nice to “see” a Primati sandwich again…yum! I miss them since it was a staple in my diet because my brother-in-law OWNS Primantis.
Excellent photography bringing back many many happy memories…kudos.

We plan on a return visit after retirement in a couple of years and look forward to once again being pjrivilaged to explore the diversity of culture and food that only can be found in the burgh……great pictures and thanks!

Wonderful pictures of my home town. Born and raised outside the city limits but never have I seen a more spectacular skyline! Living in the warm and dry climate of the southwest now; and even though we don’t share that skyline, the beauty of the desert in just as incredible. You have a keen eye for great photography. Come to Arizona and witness the beauty of the desert with that camera sometime!

I just love this town. I am a phoenix native and had the great pleasure of spending part of my summer vacation in Pittsburgh. I am a die hard Steeler fan and thought that’s all my trip was going to be about, how wrong I was. My girlfriend and I had such a memorable time that we vow to return again and soon! Great city, great people, and the greatest football team in the world.

Thank you so much Matt Robinson for bringing me back to the many reasons I love this beautiful town I grew up in, had many fantastic memories in, worked in, played in and in enjoyed the amazing variety of worldly talent and food in. I live in Atlanta now, but there is nothing, and I mean nothing, like Pittsburgh. I’ve been around the world, but I’d always come back to this amazing HOME – full of beauty, character, tradition, loving people, 4 beautiful seasons, food that would beat anywhere, generations of european customs and just comfort. I miss the Burgh !!!!

I was back for the All Star Game. I used to work for the Pittsburgh Pirates – David Arrigo, the Pirates Photographer is also an awesome photographer like yourself. I miss Pittsburgh and will always bleed Black and Gold. I have forwarded this to all of my friends out this way.

Great job! Thanks again. I need Primantis in Chicago.

I have lived in Pittsburgh for 17 years and I am originally from Madrid, Spain. I travel a lot and I know a lot of great cities all around the world. This AMAZING photos of the town I call home made me really proud and happy to live in such a beautiful and unique place. Sometimes I hate the long cold winters, the lack of places to walk to and need of using my car all the time but looking at these photos I realize that the places I see every day are nothing to complain about!
Thank you and Congratulations on your terrific work!

Pittsburgh, ah the city in the summertime, these pictures bring the modern and the past together. They remind me of the days I played on its streets and rode my bike until it got dark. I miss it, I visit every chance I have. I have lived on the West coast most of my life. But Pitssburgh, it is always in your blood and you never forget those fun loving summer days of swimming, icey – balls. walks in the park. Eat -n-Park hamburgers on a cold winter night in the parking lot.
Then you have the Strip district, no one makes food like they do, Wholley’s, and all the other good smelling stores, boy just talking about it makes me hungry. Thank you for these most beautiful pictures, I will cherish them……..Deser Dweller

My great friends I have made here can enjoy these photos but unfortunately they will still think I am exaggerating when I tell them about the people. Let’s go Penguins. I hope these photos get to them so they can see who they represent.
