Great Photos of Pittsburgh, which once was the only place that I knew. Now, 50 years later, I feel drawn to visit this page, and am reminded that my home town still has "it" for me.

It's making me homesick . . . I love the West End Overlook shot. I've never been up there, but I plan to go next trip home. And the tunnel shots?? I assume you're in a moving vehicle, not standing in the road!! Great work!

I just want to say I was born in Pittsburgh, and now live in Johnstown. I wish almost everyday that I could live in Pittsburgh. I'm 17 going on 18 and my dream is to go back from where I was born and live the rest of my life. My whole family lives in the 412 and every time I see these pictures it brings me great thoughts and memories. Great job Matt! Keep em coming!

I live in Porter, Tx just outside of Houston, and been to PA twice now. I have truly enjoyed myself both times and went to visit my best friend. I rode the trolly at the Duquesne incline and that was great! I miss being there and plan on coming back soon! I really enjoyed your pics and it sure brought back wonderful memories. Pittsburgh is a fun place!

I have forwarded this to all my friends who don't live in Pittsburgh.....these are beautiful photographs! My late husband and I celebrated New Year's Eve First Night in 2007 and it was spectacular, but we should have been standing in the distance to really appreciate the beauty of ringing in a Pittsburgh New Year. Thank you for the photos.

My late husband and I celebrated New Year’s Eve First Night in 2007 and it was spectacular, but we should have been standing in the distance to really appreciate the beauty of ringing in a Pittsburgh New Year. Thank you for the photos.

I just viewed your pics and I love them! I moved from Oakmont, Pa in 1980 and currently live in Peoria, AZ. I miss Pgh so much. My brother (whose name is Mark Robinson by the way) still lives there and I long to go home someday. Pgh is a wonderful city. Keep up the great photos.

Your photos are the "best" I've lived here for 66 years and still find it breathtaking, especially
coming out of the Fort Pitt tunnel. Also, the magnificent view from Mt Washington. You have
captured the beauty of a great city. Keep up the great work.

I love the pictures and it makes me home sick. I have not lived in DA Burgh since 1985 but I do go home often. I have to go through the Fort Pitt tunnels to return to MD from my parents house and seeing Heinz field as soon as you come out of the tunnels is FABULOUS!

Amazing views! Made us remembered the short time we spent with you guys last Thanksgiving 2002, especially the Duquesne incline-----that was breathtaking!!!! Hope you can come and visit us too. We are just 3 hours away from the famous Heavenly Leigh,Lake Tahoe, 20 minutes from different Wineries in Napa Valley and 5 minutes from Jelly Belly Factory Fairfield, CA.
Born and raised near Pgh, (Donora) but moved away years ago. There is something magic about walking the grounds of the city and the surrounding valleys, coming back to ones' roots, that makes you whole again. Loved the pics, I miss you Pittsburgh, so much that I bought Steeler crocs (shoes)!

The views and quality of these outstanding photos defy description. In viewing many of them, I reminisced seeing where I was born and went to school so many years ago. I especially liked the scenes at the Point where I worked for many years (KDKA-TV). The skyline has not changed all that much. Gorgeous then, better now.
I now live in southern California and will return to visit as soon as it warms up back there. Congratulations!

It is so good to see all the familiar places in the beautiful City of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh will always be "home" to us.

Terrific reminder of my years in Pittsburgh. One comment I find appropriate...the picture of the "crooked rails"... how poetic for all those politicans who have and currently rein in and around Pittsburgh.... Heck, Chicago has nothing over Pittsburgh when it comes to the finest politicians money can buy!

We've been gone 30 yrs. and the pics bring back alot of memories. The skyline is beautiful, especially coming out of the Fort Pitt Tunnel. And after all these years in Texas, its still "GO STEELERS"!

I have been away from my home of Pittsburgh for 28 yrs. in Atl.Ga., not a day goes by that I pray I can move back home, the pictures are wonderful, I cried when I saw them. I am from Scott Township, my home is filled with Pittsburgh momentos, but there is nothing like the real thing! Pittsburgh for sure is the soul of God`s country, as someone said in the comments, the best city in the world. I think God made only Pittsburghers feel this way, no other people from other cities seem to feel the same about their beloved cities.

I now live in the San Francisco Bay area which is the most beautiful city area in the country. Pittsburgh, where I was reared and received two university degrees, (Pitt), is still what I consider to be home. I have lived in New England, D. C., Tennessee, and California but am only nostalgic about Pittsburgh--not just the beauty but the people. Hail to Pitt, go Steelers. The Pittsburgh region is one where a person can have a lovely house in a splendid area for less than three quarters of a million dollars. This is not true in California.

The burg....I have been away to long and need to come back home. The city is alive with excitement and energy, which is hard to find anywhere. I visit over the holidays and my little one always asks; Dad with so much to do and so much family, why do we have to leave.......Hard to respond to that. Great Pic's, brings back a lot of memories. Thanks and may God bless each and everyone of us >

When I grew up and left Pittsburgh, it was called the armpit of the nation. But we produced lots of iron and steel for WWII. So what if the window sills were covered with soot! But now, beauty and memories

Born a "Berger" in 1955. Lived & raised in Peters Twp. Chased a girl from "84" PA in 1980 to Miami who went to U of M. We have never left there but my heart is always back home in Pittsburgh. We are raising 3 teenage boys who all say they want to live in the Berg. Since all our relatives are still there we visit quite often. The boys were bitten by the "berg bug" @ a young age. We raised them the right way as "Steller" fans too! I predict in 10 years we will retire back home. These photos solidify my decision! Great job. Thanks for the memories.

I've lived here nearly 50 years and can never get over the beauty of this city. I've done extensive traveling, but there is no where like da Burgh. I can barely wait until I'm on my way from the airport and through the tunnels to go home. No matter how many times I've seen it, the view is always awe inspiring! Thanks for a great job, again!

Home sweet home. We left Pittsburgh in 95 and I still miss it. Thank you for sharing.

I'd love to see a series on the North Side Mexican War Streets, Lake Elizabeth, Gus and Yaya's, Aviary, Buhl Planetarium, Carnegie Library, St. Peter Church etc.

I actually grew up on one of the Mexican War Streets. 1207 Monterey Street. A few doors up from the Y on the same side of the street. I can remember when Franco lived on Taylor and use to go to the Y to work out. He would buy all us kids ice cream from the Good Humor truck as he was leaving the Y. Then he bought the house at the corner of North Ave. and either Resaca Place or Palo Alto.

My husband grew up in Ross township. Oh my. McNightmare Road. Not sure I miss everything!

Well thanks again for sharing.

I was born in Pittsburgh 75 years ago. All of my family is buried in Pittsburgh. My wife and I will be returning there this summer as we go to our 50th college reunion at Penn State (I got my MBA from Pitt). I live in Montana now but we're really looking forward to our trip "home" this year. I long to hear that good old Pittsburgh accent....which I never even knew existed when I lived there. Having lived all over this country, my ear still has a keen sense of hearing someone from Pittsburgh and I always strike up a conversation with them. When you hear that accent, you can always be sure that the person is friendly and sincere. It gives me a warm feeling of belonging. When I even think about Pittsburgh, I drift back into that good old Pittsburgh accent myself. Pittsburghers......I love you all !!!

I love seeing pictures of my home town! These are beautiful. Thank you for posting them so that I can see Pgh in all her glory. A friend of mine, also from "da 'burg" forwarded this to me.

I live in Chicago and can't wait to get back to warmer winters (can anyone believe that I just said that?) I hope that the economy can hold more tech jobs so that we can move back home. Both hubby and I are from the area and miss family terribly.

Fantastic Pictures. Who says you can't go home? I live in Jersey now but, I was born and raised a "burger". These pictures really make me homesick for the "Burgh". Hope to visit this summer.

I enjoyed all the pictures, the bridges, Golden triangle, tunnel pictures and had a flash back of memories. There are only 3 bridges going from Indiana to Louisville, KY and think Pittsburgh is really rich. You are blessed. Teddie Criss

I lived in Hazelwood. Joined the Army at 17 and never came back to Pittsburgh. Believe me, I miss it and the photos brought back many memories. There is no place like Pittsburgh in the 50-s and 60-s.

There is just no place like home. We moved to Baltimore 4 years ago and while it has its "charm" it will never compare to Pittsburgh. These photos are really amazing. Thank you!

Great photographs. I do have a question though. If Pittsburgh is such a great city, why are there so many displaced Pittsburgh natives? Seriously, with all of the overflowing nostalgia, ask yourselves why you left. In all seriousness, it really is one of the most downtrodden depressing cities in the country. The job market sucks, the weather sucks and there is an overwhelming legacy of oppression that has been passed down generation to generation from poor immigrants who came to this country for cheap labor. 100 years later, their descendants still can't shake off the learned helplessness of their forebears when the mills closed down. It's a pretty city, but God what a dreary godforesaken place!

Dolomite, I know what you mean, but the oppressed stand together! ;-) There is such a great sense of civic pride and community in Pittsburgh. Pittsburghers have a dialect that is like their own little language. When you're from Pittsburgh, you're a Pittsburgher forever. There might be a lot of transplants, but there are a whole lot of people who'd never dream of leaving. I don't know what's so special about it, but there is something there that never goes away.

Such a delightful collection of photos, bringing back fond memories of Grandview Ave. and South Hills High 1952 - 54. Relocated to Washington, DC in the early 60's, and now reside in the Annapolis, MD area, but get back "home" every chance I get. Several years ago I was able to get a similar print of the Duquesne Incline, autographed and taken by my friend Dale Gleason, and cherished to this day. The print was displayed at that time on the front page of the Roto Section of the Pgh. Press. There were so many requests for copies of those Pgh. prints that the Press couldn't satisfy the demand. My applause to you, and hope you'll continue to please so many people with your work.

Is it possible to be infatuated with a city? I must not be normal. Of course, I'm used to Detroit. Thanks for the photographs, they are MUCH appreciated. How 'bout a little more of Oakland, Shadyside, and Squirrel Hill? Like walking up the hill to a Pitt basketball game or the street vendor at Bigelow and Forbes selling the Pitt gear on game days or something like that? Or the inside of the Carnegie library in Oakland is spectaular. Of course, the list could go on and on. Thanks again.

I visited Pittsburgh for the first time this past November. My boyfriend grew up there and was so excited to show me the city that he is so proud of. Having grown up in California, I can honestly say that I missed out on the experience of living in the Burg. The people treated me like a long lost friend that they were thrilled to see. We were busy the entire week of my visit, between seeing the city, enjoying the amazing food or visiting with the warm and wonderful people we knew and met. The only thing I enjoyed more than spending time with my guy was EXPERIENCING THE BURG! I would go back anytime! Who knows....maybe he will propose on the Incline? :)

WOW...great pictures. Having spent 50 years in the ...burgh these pics bring back memories of old friends, fish sandwiches on the Strip, The Pirates, The Steelers, The Penguins, the ease of working in the city, the view coming out of the tunnel into the city and many, many more things. I live in Southeastern Virginia now and we don't have any of the above but it is WARMER and on the Ocean. I enjoy coming back to visit, probably reflecting on the passing of time.

I have lived in beautiful, sunny Southern California for 23 years. The weather and lifestyle are phenominal, but nothing can match the unique beauty of Pittsburgh. Its geography, people and overall community amenities are amazing. I visit "home" at least once a year and am continually struck by the genuine friendliness of Pittsburghers. Now if we could just do something about Pittsburgh weather...!

Made me happy, and made me homesick as well.

Pittsburgh is not my hometown, but I spent four years here and MISS IT DEARLY. And the people is what made Pittsburgh so special. Yes, the population might be shrinking, business might be moving out, but it is a beautiful, safe and happy (remember Mr. Rogers?) place, and will always be special for me. Thanks for the memories.

Wow! I live in Northern Virginia now and there is virtually nothing like the Pittsburgh skyline or classic streetscapes or the West End Overlook... I do miss a lot of this! Not all... not the snow and colder temperatures, but the BEAUTY of my hometown! Thanks for the wonderful view of "the 'Burgh."

Wonderful photos of Pittsburgh! These sure do make me homesick! Living in the Southwest now for 11 years, I sure do miss the unique design the Pgh offers. Everyone should take a trip to Pittsburgh......What a beautiful place. THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME!

Susan,

Thank you for validating my decision to stay in Pittsburgh and practice architecture here for the past 35 years. This is truly one of the world's best cities - not only for its beauty, but for its wonderful people.

We left Pittsburgh almost 40 years ago but you never get it out of your soul. The amazing pictures just bring back why we all love Pittsburgh, the STEELERS, the PIRATES and the PENGUINS. PITTSBURGH IS STILL THE GREATEST.

Love the "Burgh" and everything about it. Now if it only had sunshine and warmth more than 53 days a year we would have paradise. But til then I'll stay warm in Carolina. But my heart will probably be there forever. Go Steelers The pictures are beautiful. Keep them coming.

Great photos! I've been living in South Florida for the past 17 years. I sure don't miss the cold weather, but I sure do miss the people, places, mountains and trees! Since my Mom passed away in 2006, I haven't really wanted to come back home to visit, but your pictures sure do strike a cord in my heart. Thanks!

Thank you for the trip back home. I was born and raised in the eastern suburbs of the burgh but have lived in Maryland for 20 years. There are a lot of Steeler fans here and transplants from Pittsburgh but I still call Pittsburgh home. Thanks for the memories!

Three decades ago, I went to Pitt and Mayor Pete Flaherty's staff promoted the slogan: "Pittsburgh, Some Place Special". Your photos bring back all the memories and show many of the ways Pittsburgh still is some place special. Thank you for posting them online so those of us who now live elsewhere can still visit.
