You have done it again.. Captured Pittsburgh at her finest. I will treasure these forever and my husband and I are preparing to go to Asheville, NC to look for jobs. That is the only thing Pittsburgh does not have to offer right now. My husband lost his job after 32 + years when the company closed. He is 58 and can’t find a job around here. He did HVAC in the Beaver County area for most of those years and the businesses he contacted have his resume on hold because they are all slow right now. The unemployment ran out at the end of November so we are in a bind. Our only alternative is to move. I hate to leave but we have to go where there is work….Our hearts will still be here…

What art, thou hast given us! See not everyone from Pittsburgh uses slang…doncha’ know. That’s what i miss about Pittsburgh…the wonderful friendly conversations and humor from passersby as you look at the view, or you walk the bridges everyday to get to work, or standing in lines everywhere. Living in Naples, Florida for almost ten years, i like to say that ‘Pittsburgh is a great city to be from’…and no one ever disagrees–even New Yorkers! My favorite view is from the middle of the West End Bridge. Does the ‘pirogy patrol’ still shush you away when you stop to take in that view? Loved the pictures of Pitt, too. 32 years of working daily in downtown…it all comes back when you look at your art.

I was born in McGee Hospital in 1929 and lived nearby for 21 years. Pittsburgh’s steelmaking was the backbone of the war effort in the 40′s. I can still remember the Bessemer furnaces lighting up the sky along the Mon. I can remember the coal soot from coal burning home furnaces as well as the dirt from the steelmills and foundries. Pittsburgh has truly had a renaissance and it is the jewel city in the East today. Congratulations to the movers and shakers that made it that way!

BEAUTIFUL PITTSBURGH. the only city where you can stand on the ground (Mt Washington, West End, Troy Hill, etc) and look down on its beautiful skyline. It was voted the second most beautiful view in the country (the Grand Canyon being #1)
I’ve lived in Pittsburgh all of my life and there is no other city like it. I have travelled to many major cities around the world. After much consideration, I’ve decided that the only other place that I would live, would be Paris:)
I’m just so in love with Pittsburgh because its true beauty is in the PEOPLE that live here (and that were born here for you out-of-towners) Pittsburgh has a long history of producing people that are proud, hard-working, and loyal. Our forefathers built this city with their blood, sweat, and tears, and I’m proud to call it home.
Remember, we are the FRIENDLY city and I well anyone to come and visit/live with us.

Pittsburgh is the Heart of Home as both my husband and I moved to CA in 65 and then Oregon in 95 where we retired. We still have family in the Burg and I plan on visiting them sometime soon. My daddy and I walked thru the rubble when Ft Pitt was torn down to make way for the point as we gathered rocks along the area as we were building a home back then. Daddy worked in the J&L steel mill on the South Side from when he was 12 and the streets were always covered with this red dust but in spite of it all, the love and friendlyness of the people was always there and still is. South Park, Kennywood, the County Fairs all still exist and remain within my heart along with the walks across the bridges in the bitter cold of winter and the breezes of summer. The floods, water sking the rivers and watching out for the barges when you fell and all the changes show the growth of the city and the love which always remains in the friendly people and their hearts. There was never any racial tensions like CA had as everyone in the burg were people and equals. The HEART OF PITTSBURGH IS ITS PEOPLE! This beauty comes through the photos.

I love this website, and I love all of you people who say you miss home. But you all disappoint me. You all say how much you love Pittsburgh, how it will always be home, but I live *here.* It makes no sense to me, because if I love something I try my damnedest to be around it as much as possible. But you all left. Maybe you didn’t have a choice. Maybe your parents dragged you out of the city and put down someplace else. But if you left because ‘it’s too cold’ that’s not a good excuse. And I don’t totally buy the whole ‘there are no jobs’ excuse either. The point is you left. You abandoned the place you love, the place you call home. The word ‘home’ means a lot to me, and I don’t use it lightly. I’ve spent the past four years in the Navy jumping from state to state, and I haven’t come across a place that would rival my home. I’m getting out soon and do you know what I am doing? Going home! It means this much to me. I could stay in the Navy right now, make good money, and serve in a place like Greece, Italy, Spain, or Japan. Or I could get out, stay where I am in Charleston SC, with my girlfriend (whom I love very much), and get a good job down here, with the sunshine and beaches. But I won’t I can’t. Because ever since I got in boot camp I’ve been homesick. My friends and family are back in Pittsburgh. I’m willing to sacrifice money, and sunshine to be with the people I love in the place I hold closest to my heart. My girlfriend is from Pittsburgh and her family moved down here fifteen years ago. She loves the Burgh too, but won’t move back because she’s too settled here. I can’t really blame her. I might lose her, and she is the best thing that has happened to me these past four years. But I am willing to take that chance because of my loyalty to my family, my friends, and my city. I wish I wasn’t alone. If you think I’m a fool, if you think I’m unrealistic, then I ask that you pray for me. And I’ll pray that you come home as well. Pittsburgh needs us. She doesn’t just need us waving terrible towels in Florida and California. She needs us at home. God bless yinz.

Perhaps one day I’ll get back there to see for myself.

I was born in 1925, raised in Pittsburgh and remember vividly the smog and coal dust that floated through the air all the time. My mother couldn’t keep clean curtains at the windows for a week before they had to come down and be washed again, and those wndow sills gathed fine coal dust as well. I don’t unerstand why I remember that so fondly, but I still do. I guess, as all the other commentators have said before me, you can take the person out of Pittsburgh but you can’t take the Pittaburgh out of the person. I was gone from the summer of 1943 (world war II) and came back just after Christmas in 1945 only to leave again in 1951 to begin my travels all over the country. I came back in 1966 and stayed until 1977 when wanderlust hit again, but we were here when the Steelers won their first superbowl. What wonderful times they were! Now I live in Florida but my heart is still in Pittsburgh although I can’t take the winters anymore. These wonderful pictures bring back many fond memories of which one is the breath taking view one sees when they pass through the Fort Pitt tunnels at night and see the beautiful city of Pirrburgh all alive with light. I must admit those picures bring on a tear or two because I will always be a Pittsgurgher. GO STEELERS!

I lived in and around the City of Pittsburgh for the first 50 years of my life. I went to H.S at North Allegheny and I got my B.A. and Master’s from Duquesne. Looking at these pictures I can still smell that southwestern Pennsylvania air and look again at those scenes that were routine to me when I lived there ( and so sentimental to me now). I miss it so. I knew it and know it so well. For as beautiful a city and as comfortable and seasonal an area why do so many of us have to leave it to make a decent living elsewhere? Like so many thousands a year like myself why in God’s name did we have to leave? – none of us wanted to- I sincerely hope we can all come home some day- I miss my home .

After, California, Oklahoma, Texas, Minnesota, Colorado, and back to Texas I can see in your pictures why people think Pittsburgh is so beautiful… There is no place like it. Hey STEFON, I agree with the corrupt gov’t and lack of jobs… however both are improving as we speak. High tech jobs have been moving back into the area at a record pace and USAir recently even chose Pitt over Phoenix and NC for their Air traffic headquarters. About the traffic, you have got to be kidding me… I could name about 30 cities in the U.S. with worse traffic than Pittsburgh. And the complaint about the weather is equally ludicrous, you people act like Pitt resides in the Bermuda triangle or something. Well NEWSFLASH, the Pittsburgh area receives the same damn weather as all of the northern cities in surrounding it from the eastern seaboard to Chicago, but its winters are more mild than Chicago’s and other great lake cities, and its summers are more mild than the cities on the eastern seaboard. But hey, I wouldn’t want to inconvenience your argument with FACTS Stephon, so you may continue to degrade Pitt if you want, it seems to be the trendy thing to do for people that are too weak to handle a little bit of snow and cold for a couple of months.
